“Abaca” Fibre in Textile and Engineering Fields

“Abaca” fibre is multiple celled, rich in cellulose and bonded by lignin. Cross markings are rare and fibre tips pointed and flat, ribbon like individual fibre diameter range from 14 to 50 microns and the length from 0.25 cm to 1.3 cm. This fibre “Abaca” belongs to musa sapientum species and it is none other than “banana” fibre. India’s banana production is 23% of world’s production which is the largest in the world. Increasing demand of eco-friendly clothing in developed countries like Europe, USA and Canada, rise in per capita requirement of textile / garments, preference in using natural fabric over synthetic fabric in hot and humid tropical and sub tropical climates, view to replace the energy intensive synthetic fibres like glass and carbon particularly in the composite manufacture and cheap cost involved in the production of the fibre boost the demand for banana fibre.
Presently, waste banana stems pose problem of disposal and are available almost free of cost in many parts of our country. The use of banana fibre for textile and other purpose as natural material is a new concept for India. This can be executed by setting a facility for fibre extraction from waste stem, cleaning, grading and converting it up to finished readymade garment. This natural plant fibre also known to be carbon neutral with high strength can be blended easily with cotton fibre or other synthetic fibres to produce blended fabric & textiles. It is mainly used by cottage industry in Southern India at present. Banana fibre also finds use in high quality security/currency paper, packing cloth for agriculture products, ship towing ropes, wet drilling cables, composite materials for automotives, etc.
 Though considerable research work has been done on this fibre by textile research organizations including BITRA, CITRA, KVIC (Khadi Village Industry Corporation) and NRCB (National Research Centre for Banana-Trichy), let us also join our hands in making this fibre a very promising source of natural fibre in future and make India a cleaner greener and economically grown country.

The Pharaohs' surveyors used measurement based on body parts [a palm was the width of the hand,a cubit the measurement from elbow to finger tips] to measure land and building earlier in Egypt history. US customary units are a system of measurement commonly used in the US. Many US units are virtually identical to their imperial counterparts, but the US customary system developed from English units used in the British empire before the system of imperial units was standardized in 1824. The US system of units is similar to British imperial system. both system derive from the evolution of local units themselves mostly trace back to roman and anglo-saxon units.
Today these units are defined in terms of SI units. The international system of units(SI) has been an outstanding success. Since its introduction in 1960, it meets well the needs of science and commerce. By relating all our measurement to this shared set of standard units, such as the metre, gram and second. it is possible  to trade and communicate throughout the world without misunderstanding. India is following the SI system, for the past 5 decades, but still in many local stores uses inches to sell there products though the products are manufactured according to SI system.
This shows that the Indians are following the traditional methods of Egyptians. even, after the modern measurement systems.

BLUE THE PLANET WAS - BLUE IAM TODAY

It was those wonderful days in my school; I came across the word ‘blue’ in a conversation across two speakers and was confused with the meaning. My teacher explained the meaning of ‘blue’ to be sad. And pointed out that “it is not the blue that you see in the globe” which was in her desk. Days passed by, we moved to a digital world and developments reached beyond heights yet today I feel blue to no longer show you the blue in the globe.
We all know why this has happened and if some of us still don’t realize it, then we must take pain to look in the mirror again! We are blessed to live joyfully in 1/3 part of the world granted to us by the Almighty. And the remaining major part of the land we hunt for resource, food and other needs in the oceans, rivers and lakes to fulfill our needs. Aren’t we so greedy rather selfish, what about the life in the sea? Do we care about them? Shouldn’t we show some respect to them? Some felt pity on them when they read this question…. “They are the source of food for you…they are under threat…the same is going to happen to you…at least wake up now!”

Automobile cylinder during manufacturing is checked for its inner diameter in order to accommodate the moving piston such that the moving fit is quite efficient. The higher the tolerance between the cylinder and the piston, the lesser the fuel efficiency. To achieve a better efficiency, each cylinder is checked for its inner diameter instead of random sampling.

 Every cylinder and piston are checked for 100% for their dimensions and for perfect fit. Industries follow such inspection standards to increase the efficiency of the engine. Modern inspection are adopted to maintain the dimensions to such a level of efficiency.Once, it has been reported by a Hero Honda customer that his motor bike gave 120km/hr. When he showed the bike to them, they took back the same and paid him double. A mechanical engineer died & went to heaven. Upon arrival Angel checked "THE BOOK" and didn't find his name, so he informed the engineer that he must get on the elevator and go DOWNSTAIRS.Reluctantly the engineer boarded the elevator for the long trip DOWNSTAIRS and upon arrival in hell found that he was very uncomfortable due to the excessive heat. He asked to see the devil and was granted an interview, at which time he requested a large number of materials with which to build an air conditioner. The devil replied that he could have anything he wished, and what he couldn't find, they would steal. So the engineer spent a month and a half building an air conditioner, which when completed, cooled hell off only a few degrees. Somewhat unsatisfied the engineer requested additional materials, with which he spent another month and a half building a sprinkler system to add to the cooling effect of his air conditioner. Hell was getting much cooler now and folks were more...

MECH TALK - TWISTING THE TUSK OF TECHNOLOGY



The Bahrain World Trade Center is the first skyscraper to have wind turbines integrated into the structure of the building. Three large turbines are suspended between two office towers, The towers are aerodynamically tapered to funnel wind and draw air into the turbines. This airfoil tapering allows the wind to enter the turbines at a perpendicular angle and increases air speed as much as 30 percent in each of the 95 ft wide turbine rotors. The turbine supply about 15 percent of the electricity used by the skyscraper-approximately the same amount of electricity used by 300 homes
